May River Haven
A busy Washingtonian couple was seeking a place of refuge and rejuvenation where they could embrace the simple and holistic qualities of a home away from home. With mindfulness being heavily applied in both of their professional practices, the home was choreographed internally and physically on the site to create a meditative sanctuary for observation and illumination. The main living space, conceived as an agrarian gathering place, transformed over time to incorporate an entry porch that drew focus to the expansive view of the marsh and May River. A screened fireplace room below the master-sleeping suite is connected to the shed by a dynamic, open stair that reveals an intimate moment adjacent a reflecting pool and window composing the landscape beyond. Guests moving through and inhabiting the space experience pure transcendence where simple yet sophisticated living spaces are created.
