First impressions are everything. The exterior of your home sets the tone for what you and your guests can expect on the inside. Over the last few decades, exterior home designs have shifted dramatically. Today’s modern homes focus on sleek sophistication that maximizes natural light, draws attention to large widows, and emphasizes wide viewing platforms. These elements should be combined flawlessly with soft, earthy tones that contrast the industrial materials. Read on to learn more about modern home exterior design trends.

The Anderson Studio of Architecture and Design has earned a reputation for leading the industry with innovative and creative home designs. We aim to combine classic and modern elements to create a facade that makes a bold first impression. Get in touch to design your dream home.

Large Panes of Glass & Windows

Today’s modern home is all about accentuating the views. More and more luxury homes are incorporating large panes of glass and windows to offer breathtaking views of the scenery from almost every room. Here are a few different window options that each contribute a unique feel to the house:

  • Floor-to-ceiling windows in common spaces and bedrooms allow for plenty of natural light
  • Uniquely shaped windows add a specific character and charm to both the interior and exterior of the home
  • Using large panes of glass and walls of windows is not only aesthetically pleasing, but they are also energy efficient

You can see how the Anderson Studio of Architecture and Design incorporated unique window options into designs like the Modern House project.

A Combination of Materials

In today’s modern luxury home, each room is designed to feel definitively unique, while also blending in seamlessly with the rooms around it. This balance can only be achieved with the careful combination of both natural and industrial elements. The exterior of a modern luxury home today often includes a mix of plaster, concrete, and steel, but is balanced out with more subtle, natural elements like timber and glass. The unique characteristics of each component add another layer of sophistication to the home, and the combination of materials creates a oneness throughout the space.

You can see how we incorporated this element of modern architecture into designs like our Tree House project and the Surfsong Salon project. In both cases, we were tasked with maintaining as much of the natural surroundings as possible and to create an exterior that would incorporate both industrial and natural elements.

Mushroom and Earthy Tones

While some aspects of modern architecture are meant to stand out, many design teams have begun to incorporate more natural, earthy tones as part of their design theme. These colors can be integrated on a larger scale, such as using them to paint sections of the exterior, or can be featured as accent pieces, like on window trimmings or as the color scheme for an entrance door.

Disjointed Levels

Disjointed levels are a seductive and sophisticated way to allow an abundance of natural light to flood into common areas. This “chopped up” layout adds dimension and plays with critical elements of symmetry. In doing so, the disjointed levels create unobstructed views in some places and maximize privacy in others. This design style makes a bold statement from every angle.

Sophisticated Facade

The facade of your home speaks volumes about your design style. From charming brick to bold stone, modern homes utilize luxury materials for the design of the exterior. Not only does the specialty facade stand strong against environmental factors like wind, rain, solar heat, and thermal bridging, it also gives your home it’s personality and “wow factor.”
