Built as a refuge for a busy California couple, this creek-side cottage was constructed on land populated with ancient live oaks; sited to preserve the oaks and accentuate the creek-side vistas. The owners wanted their Kiawah home to be less formal than their primary residence, ensuring that it would accommodate 3 – 4 vacationing couples. Volumes, room shapes and arrangements provide classical symmetries, while careful detailing with variations in colors, finishes and furnishings provide soothing spaces for relaxation.

Windswept Villas bb

Designed to maximize the pleasure of outdoor living, these courtyard villas capitalize on Christophe Harbour’s beautiful weather. Cottages for sleeping and living create out door spaces for leisure and recreation with intimate gardens next to bed room suites. Terraces are shaded with plants and tropical trellises. Pools and fountains are positioned to increase cooling while blurring the distinction between inside and out. Villas have second stories with covered pavilions for savoring sunsets and sea breezes.

Kiawah Development Partners asked the Studio to design 2 and 3 bedroom villas between the Beach Club, tennis facility and Great Salt Harbour. The villas build on island vernacular, best building practices and green building. The concept targets vacationers who want great design, livability, amenities and location in a compact villa. The villa’s “unbundled” concept takes advantage of each property’s natural features. The walls of each villa’s living areas and bedroom suites open to swimming pools and shaded terraces.

Three-Suite Retreat bb

This 3 suite Caribbean retreat on Christophe Harbour employs many green building practices. The entry presents views from the sunset pavilion to the Great Salt Harbour and Nevis Peak volcano. The outdoor living area provides views of Sandy Bank Beach, the main indoor living spaces and stairs to an intimate pool terrace below. Built into a hillside, the structure maximizes lower level cooling through a ventilated clerestory, allowing hot air to rise and soft natural light to illuminate the back wall of the lower level great room.

A sense of calmness is reinforced through color, texture and material selections in this ocean side retreat for a family of five. The main living areas offer gracious spaces for friendly gatherings, while separate family and guest areas provide privacy and ample opportunity to rest and recharge. Ocean views are captured from the main living areas and bed rooms despite a compact lot densely populated with maritime oaks. The overall size is downplayed by revealing the home in layers, through subtle, yet complex solutions.

The owners of this home travel extensively and appreciate the great outdoors. Global travels shaped their desire for a home that embraces nature. The bridge connecting the sleeping and living structures allows cool ocean breezes to pass from the marsh to the front yard; decks and stairs to pool and terrace visually connect inside and out. Most walls from the street are solid, providing privacy, yet they open to rooms of glass, timber and soaring ceilings with views of Bass and Cinder Creeks and Folly Island.
